Troubleshooting
What the connection light means, and what to do when something doesn't work.
The connection light
The light by your chats shows how this device is connected to your Mac. Tap it for details.
| Light | Means |
|---|---|
| Green | Connected. The details say whether it’s direct or through a relay. Relayed is a little slower, but everything works. |
| Yellow, pulsing | Connecting. |
| Red | Can’t reach your Mac. |
| Grey | Not connected yet. |
Messages you send while it’s red are kept and go out when it’s green again.
Can’t reach your Mac
Work through these in order:
- Is the Mac awake? A sleeping Mac can’t answer. Wake it, and for a MacBook, consider Listen mode.
- Is Pallm’s service running? On the Mac, the menu bar icon says so. If it’s stopped, choose Start Daemon.
- Does the Mac have internet? It needs a connection to be reached from outside your home.
- Try reconnecting. Tap the light and choose Reconnect now.
- Still nothing? In Settings › Connection details…, use Share Log and send it to support.
No models in the picker
- Make sure your model server is running. In LM Studio, the server switch is in the Developer tab.
- Check Settings › Advanced › Model servers. A server with a red light isn’t answering; try Restart.
- A server on another machine, or on an unusual port, isn’t found by itself. Add it with Add server….
A reply stops or fails
- “Not enough memory”: another model is loaded. Choose Stop it and start, or eject models in Settings › Advanced › Loaded models.
- The chat is too long: compact it from the context meter under the message box.
- The server crashed: its models show as offline. Restart it from Settings › Advanced › Model servers.
“The daemon runs from another copy of Pallm”
You have more than one copy of Pallm.app, and the service is running from the other one, so updating this copy doesn’t update it. Choose Use This Copy. If macOS keeps starting the old one, delete it (Show Other Copy finds it) and choose Use This Copy again.
Something “needs an update”
A feature that says it needs an update, such as “Projects need an update”, means the app on this device is newer than the service on your Mac. Update Pallm on the Mac: Pallm › Check for Updates…. After it updates, Pallm restarts its service once no reply is being written.
Notifications
- Check that notifications for Pallm are allowed in iOS Settings, and in Settings › Notifications in Pallm.
- If a notification shows a blank square instead of Pallm’s icon, restart your iPhone. iOS caches app icons for notifications, and a restart clears it.
The log
The service writes to ~/.pallm/pallmd.log. Choose Reveal Daemon Log from the menu bar icon to find it. pallm status in the Terminal gives a quick summary.
